The venue is known for its International Jazz Festival, which is held annually in September. The festival hosts musicians worldwide and features music spanning many centuries of styles such as Latin jazz, big band swing, bebop, Afro-Cuban jazz, among other genres.
The Balcony Club – Dallas, Texas
The Balcony Club is a small jazz club situated in the Deep Ellum district of Dallas, Texas. Musician and producer Bobby Malloch opened it as an extension of The Balcony Bistro restaurant. It features some great live music performances from blues to rockabilly styles and plenty in between.
Bix Restaurant – San Francisco, California
Bix Restaurant has been serving diner fare in a restaurant that seats around 60 people since 1942. It is well known for its hosts’ live jazz performances and its style of American cuisine served from breakfast to dinner.
The menu consists mainly of traditional sandwiches like The Bix Burger or a fish fillet sandwich with malt vinegar on Ciabatta bread.
Cafe-Bar Europa – San Diego, California
This is a small, intimate jazz club where you can enjoy live performances of some great music from the likes of John Lee Hooker and Charlie Barnet.
Cafe-Bar Europa has been around since 1939 when it opened as an Italian restaurant serving dishes like spaghetti with meatballs in creamy tomato sauce or lasagne made with juicy beef strips.
Cleopatra’s Needle – New York City
Cleopatra’s Needle is a nightclub located in Manhattan that has been open since the 1940s. It features some of the best live jazz performances in NYC and hosts Latin bands, blues musicians, or even rockabilly performers.
Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen – Boston, Massachusetts
Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen is one of the only locations on our list for jazz that also serves food. In addition, they offer live music every night with a variety of acts playing from blues to bebop to smooth jazz.
Since they are open 24 hours, you can enjoy their tasty menu offerings like The Big Kahuna Burger.
Elephant Room – Austin, Texas
Elephant Room is a small jazz club that has been in operation since the late 1990s. It features live music from rock, blues, and country to funk, swing, and bebop styles of jazz.
The bar also hosts events like poetry readings or comedy nights and provides space for private parties with up to 150 people.
Green Mill Jazz Club – Chicago, Illinois
Green Mill Jazz Club is the oldest jazz club on our list, opening in 1907. It was originally a speakeasy and has been used for various purposes since then, including as a bordello before being renovated to its present-day status by Garry Grossman
Jazz at the Bistro – St. Louis, Missouri
Jazz at the Bistro is a small, intimate jazz club that has been open since 1991. It features live performances by some of the best local and international musicians from different genres, including blues, rockabilly, or reggae music, as well as old-time country styles.
Jimmy Mak’s – Portland, Oregon
Jimmy Mak’s features some of the best jazz musicians playing in Portland, Oregon.
The club is a small venue with only around 65 seats and always fills up quickly, so it is advisable to book your tickets well in advance if you want guaranteed entry.
It also offers great food at reasonable prices from their menu, including items like The Jimmy Mak’s French Dip sandwich or their vegetarian specialties.
