Returning to the Festival this year, Gregory and the Hawk is New York singer-songwriter Meredith Godreau, whose intimate storytelling is defined by a delicate voice and stark, simple form.
Singer and composer Meredith Godreau has released three full length albums and multiple EPs under the stage name Gregory and the Hawk, often laying a full band sound to tape but taking a solo show on the road. At the heart of her own brand of homespun pop is Godreau’s characteristic voice and her simple song form, which evolves thanks to alternate tunings, chromatic lead lines, and well-versed stories. The fourth Gregory and the Hawk album is set for independent release this summer.
What bands or albums have been in heavy rotation lately? Heart, Paul Simon – Graceland, Graham Nash, and The Velvet Underground.
Who are you most looking forward to hearing/seeing or experiencing at WMC Fest? Eluvium – I’ve listened to some of the recordings and am really looking forward to seeing the live show.
What are your 3 tour/show essentials? My obsessive list of totally obvious things I need to play the show (including ‘guitar’), at least one piece of lucky jewelry which must not be removed for the duration of the trip (to ensure safe return) and phone charger.
If you could have one super power, what would it be? Knowing a person’s intentions from the moment you meet them. I think if I had this ability I might not need much other power because I would be prepared.
What’s your favorite guilty pleasure song (or band!)? Oh god, it’s Lana Del Ray! My favorite lyric: “I say you the bestest/lean in for a big kiss..” but I assure you, I know the lyrics to the non-singles as well.
